Collingwood hadn't won a home and away game against the Demons at the MCG since Round 1, 1954 but with a double chance on offer they would never get a batter chance than while their opponents were down on the mat and second last on the ladder.
The Pies took an eleven point lead into the first change and were never headed again. Only when they took their foot off the gas in the last quarter did Melbourne boot 4.3, including two posters, to earn some respectability.
