With the two sides trapepped together at the wrong end of the table the match represented a good opportunity for the Redlegs to jump above North on the table in an otherwise meaningless game.
In a fast, clean game North could have built up a big lead in the third quarter but they were inaccurate and Melbourne led at three quarter time. The visitors got their kicking straight in the last quarter and piled on 7.5 to 3.1 to run away with the victory.
Melbourne had shown brilliance in patches throughout the day, but were beaten in the rucks and marking duals all day and it helped North overhaul them to get the win.
The defeat left Melbourne as a confirmed bottom four side, but they were now two games and percentage clear of last with two games to play.
Best were Hooper, Dickens and Warne-Smith
