Despite dull weather and heavy showers in the days leading up to the game an absence of wind and rain meant the game was played in perfect football conditions. The two sides took advantage of the favourable weather to put on a fast, open game.
Melbourne went into the match without four injured players and the suspended Frank Harris. Geelong were missing three of their own but they managed to started brightly, but were unable to maintain their form into the second quarter where Melbourne took over and kicked 5.3 to nothing.
Each side kicked two goals in the third quarter, but late in the game Geelong were handicaped by carrying two injured players who had suffered knocks during the match.
Best were Coutie, Maxwell and Jones.
