With the season coming to an end and Melbourne having won just one game all year, the Reds couldn't take advantage of Collingwood missing four of their best players because they themselves could barely rustle up 18 players to take part in the match.
By kicking four goals into the wind in the first quarter Collingwood showed that they could not be beaten, and they gradually pulled away across the afternoon. From the point in the second quarter when it was four goals each the visitors kicked 11 goals to two.
