Just as Melbourne had got themselves back in the top four thanks to two wins in a row, the Demons lost to the side one spot above them on the ladder. They'd already lost to them once in Round 1 and this defeat put them back down to fifth on the ladder.

The Bombers started well, their superior teamwork and pace kept Melbourne goalless in the first quarter while they booted three of their own. Four goals down early in the second quarter, Melbourne spurned numerous chances in kicking 2.6 and letting Essendon extend the gap.

Melbourne had their best quarter of the day in the third but didn't manage to take anything off the margin when they allowed two goals late in the term. Smith kicked two goals early in the fourth but the Demons were too far behind and ended up losing the quarter by two points.

Spittle, Cordner and McGrath were Melbourne's best. 19th men were Lourey and Roscoe.
