Coming into the match on a three game winning streak the Demons added another victory and further enhanced their credentials as a finals contender. For the second week in a row their victory was built on keeping the opposition goalless for two full quarters - Collingwood only managing one point in the full second and fourth quarters.
Despite the heavy ground and strong wind the two sides put on a good quality game, and it was the third quarter when the Demons won the match - kicking 5.4 into the wind against Collingwood's 6.1. When the Magpies were unable to match them in the last term and failed to score they were beaten.
Best were Dockett, Don Cordner and Mueller.
The win left the Demons threatening the top four, but their diabolical percentage meant that they would have to rely on finishing clear of the sides below them to qualify unless they could put together a string of big victories in the last few weeks of the season. They hadn't kicked a score of over a hundred points since the opening day of the season.
