The Demons engaged in a shootout with the Hawks for three quarters, but were found wanting in the final term when the game was on the line. Three goals to Kelvin Templeton in the first quarter helped open up a 21 point lead, and they were as much as 27 in front at one point.

They were 10 points in front at half time, and blocked several attacking thrusts where the Hawks got within a goal. It wasn't until the 11 minute mark of the third term that the Hawks hit the lead, and from there it was smooth sailing.

Chris Connolly had dominated Terry Wallace all day, but when "Plough" got going he was one of the prime movers in the Hawks comeback.

Ken Judge, only in the side because of an injury to Dermott Brereton, helped himself to a career high seven goals - including four in eight minutes as the rout took hold. Michael Moncrieff was relatively well held at full-forward by Steven Smith but still managed five goals.

Ron Barassi hadn’t been happy when his side was winning, so he was understandably furious now. He promised an investigation into his side’s inability to withstand pressure. He said: “This has happened three weeks in a row. That’s enough times to consider why these fade-outs are happening in the second half”.

Best were Giles, Elshaug and Connolly. Flower suffered a bruised shoulder and Smith bruised thighs.

The score is the 18th highest ever conceded by the Demons.
