Eight goals from Peter Hudson helped the Hawks pull away from the home side who they'd been unable to shake for three quarters. With his fellow forwards down on their game it was Hudson who was forced to single handedly drag his side over the line by chasing and harassing opponents and by setting goals up for teammates.
Hudson was ably assisted by Leigh Matthews who had 41 possessions and three goals for the day. Melbourne comfortably beat the other 18 men that the Hawks sent out but couldn't handle the two superstars. Craig McKellar was giving Don Scott a run for his money in the ruck and proving handy around the ground while Ray Biffin gave his side a seven point lead a minute into the last term en route to five goals for the day.
The Flower brothers on opposing wings were dominant and Greg Wells gave his usual whole hearted performance but when the ball went forward the Hawks were deadly. Hudson thrashed Graham Osborne in the first quarter, necessitating the move of Shane Grambeau onto him. Grambeau held the champion to one goal in two quarters of football but lost control in the last term.
After Biffin's goal extended the lead to seven points the Hawks kicked four goals in six minutes to take back the lead and were never headed again.
