After a week’s break the Demon defence, considered to be the side's strength, met its match in the Bombers forward line. Essendon had lost four of their last five, but recovered to hand Melbourne a second consecutive defeat.
At the final siren Norm Smith was despondent. With his head down he walked from the bench to the players' race without looking at or talking to any of his players.
Best for the Demons were Williams, Leitch and Miller. Emselle (strained ankle) was replaced by Lord at three quarter time.
