Having made it to second on the ladder with six straight wins, behind Carlton on percentage only, the Demons blew a golden chance to close the gap on the Blues with a surprise home loss to the Swans.

In difficult winds South beat Melbourne in the air, usually one of the Demons' strong points, and even full-forward Fred Fanning was out of sorts and not able to wreak the sort of havoc he had been for most of the previous two months despite his teammates looking for him at every opportunity.

Initially Melbourne played the poor conditions better, using handball instead of kicking long. Two late goals gave them a 17 point advantage. The got the first of the second quarter as well to open a handy lead, but it was their last of the half and South struck back to be within a point at the break.

Two missed chances for Mueller early in the third quarter cost the Demons, and after wasting more chances with short passes and poor position play South took a five point lead at the last change. They held on to win in a tight last quarter.

McGrath, Deans and Lock were best. Kennedy and Scanlan were 19th and 20th men.

The loss dropped Melbourne to third with a string of difficult matches to come.
