Melbourne welcomed Geelong to the MCG for the first match of the season, but in front of a paltry crowd they were badly beaten. They took to the field with a under-sized team lacking Nolan, Purse, Strong, Flintoft and Smith from the previous season's best team. The committee had some trouble filling the 18, but they played surprisingly well early in the match before the visitors settled and took control.

There was a strong north-west wind, but the shelter of the MCG stands meant it didn't unduly affect the game. Two early goals put the home side in front but by quarter time Geelong had three goals on the board and they kept Melbourne to a point in the second quarter as they started to take over despite losing one of their players to a compound thumb fracture.

Besides some improved third quarter form by the home side it was all Geelong and the margin blew out to almost 10 goals by the end of the match, leaving new coach Eddie Drohan with plenty to think about for the rest of the season.

Best were McKenzie, Robertson and Pearce.
