The Tasmanian defender was troubled by injury, playing eight games in his first year before breaking his collarbone in the Round 12 Reserves game. A broken leg in a 1971 practice match against Port Adelaide then kept him out until round 13, and after dislocating his shoulder in a 1972 pre-season intra-club match he played just one game for the season.

At the end of 1973 Leary was cleared to Hobart. He later captain-coached Sandy Bay, then Clarence to premierships in 1979 and 1981 before being named an inaugural inductee in the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2005. Coached Tasmania in 1982 and 1986.
