May 1883 match vs South Melbourne

Saturday May 26 - South Melbourne Cricket Ground
Crowd: Approximately 4000

Melbourne 3.10
South Melbourne 2.12 (half time 3.3-2.3)

Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Bertie Collins 2, Billy Stiffe 1

After an opening round loss to Essendon, Melbourne travelled to the better credentialed South and caused a surprise. They were missing several players through injury and were given little chance.

The visitors scored first behind, and the opening goal of the match came not long after courtesy of ex-Geelong man Collins who kicked from 50 yards within the first 10 minutes, and Melbourne continued to press until the same player booted another goal a few minutes later.

A surprise two goal deficit spurred South on, and then had their best attack of the match - eventually kicking their first goal of the game. They equalised not long after from a fine kick from distance on a difficult angle but three minutes later Stiffe put Melbourne back in front with a goal from a mark.

In the second half South could have won easily, but they missed several easy shots on goal and by the last 10 minutes of the game darkness had fallen and the two sides played out the game without a goal.

Best were McKenzie, Collins and Murphy.
