June 1883 match vs Carlton

Saturday June 2 - MCG
Crowd: 7300

Melbourne 3.7
Carlton 5.7 (Half time 1.3 to 3.5)

Carlton win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: John Rickards 2, Bob Booth 1

The match was played as a fundraiser for ex-Carlton player George Coulthard who was suffering a serious illness, but a cold, wet day with atrocious playing conditions kept the crowd down. The game raised around 130 pounds for him.

Still, despite the weather a large number of spectators saw the game. The game started 25 minutes late due to Melbourne players showing up late, but they then opened the scoring. Despite the goal players were forced to kick the ball along the ground instead of picking it up due to the conditions, and it led to a number of mistakes which amused the spectators.

Despite the conditions Carlton managed three quick goals before half time. Many spectators expected the game to be abandoned at half time. It continued, and the second half was no more than a series of scrimmages, with Melbourne getting back to within one goal. With light fading they were making a great attack on the Carlton goal, but in the dark the visitors scored the sealer.

Best were McIntyre, Booth and McKenzie.

Notes
Some sources have Stiffe scoring a goal
