The opposition for the 20-a-side game was made up of players from Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College.

An umpire was appointed at each goal to prevent disputes, but despite plucky performances by the young players where they were unlucky not to score a goal their own goal was under siege all day and the game was ended in 45 minutes.

Melbourne was captained by Henry Harrison.
