July 1883 match vs South Melbourne

Saturday 21 July - South Melbourne
Crowd: 4000

Melbourne 3.9
South Melbourne 0.3 (half time 3.6-0.3)

Melbourne win by 3 goals

Goalkickers: Collins 1, Carr 1, Rush 1

The sides met for the third time in 1883, and Melbourne won their third match against South - one more than they'd won against senior sides combined in 1882. The home side had just returned from a trip to Sydney and looked sluggish.

Morris defused an early attack on Melbourne's goal, and got the ball up the other end where his side made first behind. They might have had a major except for Conway's kick being touched through by one of his own teammates, but soon after Collins succeeded in putting the ball between the posts unmolested.

Melbourne continued to be the better side, adding more behinds to their tally before Carr got the second goal. Rush added another soon after.

South woke up after the break and pressed hard early in the second half, but they weren't rewarded with a goal and each side scored three behinds for the second half.

Best were Conway, Collins and McKenzie.
