July 1882 match 1 vs South Melbourne

Saturday 1 July - South Melbourne Cricket Ground
Crowd: "About 3000"

Melbourne 1.11 (Morris)
South Melbourne 2.12 (half time 1.10-0.2)

South Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Morris 1

Melbourne's 1882 winless run against senior sides stretched to a sixth game in a row when they went to South Melbourne and threw away a half time lead. South was the only senior side they'd avoided losing to all year, but couldn't repeat the dose.

The visitors won the toss and kicked with a strong breeze, putting South under pressure immediately from the kick off. They might have the opening goal but missed a place kick and scored a behind not long after. They continued to pepper the goals and registered three behinds in the first five minutes of the game.

Morris eventually broke through for the first goal of the game, and Melbourne continued to besiege South's goal but couldn't add to their lead. When the home team went forward they were kept out by the wind, and only narrowly avoided conceding a second goal when McKenzie hit the post from a running shot.

With the wind in South's favour in the second half a one goal lead was never going to be enough, and South did kick two goals to win the game. One was disputed as Melbourne claimed the player had gone out of bounds first, but it was allowed by the umpire and South prevailed.

Best were Morris, Rennard and Aitken.
