July 1872 match vs Sandhurst

Saturday 13 July - Kangaroo Flat Cricket Ground, Sandhurst

Sandhurst 0
Melbourne 1 (half time 0-0)

Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkicker: Ben Goldsmith

The game was originally arranged to be 16-a-side but only 14 Melbourne players turned up so the game was played with those numbers.

In intermittent rain Melbourne attacked first but could only kick minors. The locals then had the ball at Melbourne's end for a time but couldn't break through, with a strong wind blowing that meant the ball would rarely go 20 yards when kicked. Each side had their chances in difficult conditions in the first half but there was no score.

With the wind in the second half Melbourne had the advantage, but on the unsteady ground they couldn't score until a Goldsmith punt bounced through to open the scoring. After 20 further minutes no goals were scored and Melbourne ended their trip as victors.

Best were Carr, Goldsmith and Bell.

Selected team
Duff, Ryan, Freeman, Goldsmith, Bennie, Bell (c), C. Carr, R. Carr, McCracken, W. Williams, Forrester, Fisher, Willan, Gaggin, Pender, Corrigan, McGonigle

Notes
Some sources say Melbourne played at a handicap of six, and that shortly after Goldsmith gave them the lead the ball burst and the match was called over.
