Originally from Melbourne, where he was residentially tied to St Kilda, Baumgartner moved to Geelong to study and played with the Cats for three years and 27 games. In 1955 he got a job in Dandenong and requested a clearance to the Demons to be closer to work.
Geelong initially refused him his freedom, but as part of his clearance application he submitted a letter from Geelong promising him a clearance if he wanted one after his three years of study were up. It was granted.
He played his matches in 1955 and was runner-up in the Gardiner Medal for Best and Fairest in the Seconds before being cleared to St Kilda shortly before the 1956 season began. He added 16 games to his total with the Saints.
Baumgartner's daughter Michelle was a record breaking middle distance runner who won six Australian Championships at 400m and 800m during her career. She competted in the 1990 Commonwealth Games and 1992 Olympic Games teams.
