'Major' Jenkyn was recruited by Melbourne after playing for Brighton in a pre-season match.

Enlisted to fight in World War I in July 1915 at 39-years-old. He left for conflict in October of that year, served on the Western Front with the 4th Battalion and returned to Australia in July 1918.
