The junior club played with 23, but were still thrashed handily. At first the game was played on the railway side wing, with the ball spending several minutes going out of bounds. Clifton ad the first opportunity, but failed to register a score. Melbourne scored the first goal of the day through Dodds before the quarter time break.
In the second quarter Melbourne attacked immediately, having a goal disallowed. They had seven further chances but failed to add another goal. It was only after half time that the senior club asserted their authority, kicking five goals to nil.
