With the chance to go a game clear at the top of the ladder, Melbourne dominated the first quarter but could not convert effectively. Six scoring shots only produced one goal, and keeping Fremantle without any inside 50s until the second quarter was wasted when the Dockers led at half time.
Freo continued to be the better side immediately after the break, but Melbourne rebounded to take a one goal lead into the last quarter courtesy of a late Karen Paxman goal. They didn't kick another, and Freo took their chances better to spring an upset.
