Melbourne were never challenged by their visitors from the SANFL. The Redlegs had run St. Kilda to twenty points in Adelaide two nights before and looked weary for the trip.
A 33-point lead at the first change established Demon dominance, and even when the South Australians managed to get their hands on the ball in the second quarter they found it impossible to penetrate the Demon defence marshalled by Gary Hardeman and Tony Sullivan.
Melbourne's best were Burgmann, Clark and Hardeman but recruit ruckman John Gallus was also impressive with four goals.
