1877 August Match vs Combined South Australians

Monday 13 August - Exhibition Grounds
Crowd: 600-1000

Combined South Australians 0
Melbourne 5 (half time 0-1)

Melbourne win by five goals

Goalkickers: Charles Baker 2, Downes 2, Munro 1

Played against a combination of Port Adelaide, South Park, Victorian and Woodville in Adelaide. Melbourne were allowed to use their own ball in the second half, which was a great advantage to them compared to the larger South Australian ball.

After the game started 20 minutes late, the locals attacked first but were easily repelled. Melbourne attacked heavily for the first 20 minutes but couldn't convert despite several marks in promising positions before Baker finally kicked the goal. It was the only goal of the first half, but when the small ball was introduced in the second part of the game the visitors began to dominate.

After five minutes the game was all Melbourne, but they once again missed a number of chances. The South Australians had a brief rush forward but Downs scored on a counter attack. He added another shortly after before Baker and Munro piled on another pair of goals.

Best were Lamrock, Baker and Downs.
