Melbourne win by 9 points
Well out of the finals race, Melbourne had won two games in a row to rescue something from their disappointing 1992 season but the Demons were still expected to suffer at the hands of the Magpies at Victoria Park. On a weekend where three games were decided by more than 100 points Melbourne delivered a shocking upset courtesy of the boot of Allen Jakovich.
'Jako' registered his 100th career goal, equalling the record of John Coleman for the fastest century but he didn't have it all his way, with a female spectator making an unspecified complaint about his conduct during the game. It wasn't one sided though, witnesses stated that several Collingwood fans had been seen abusing Jakovich when he was taken from the ground during the first quarter.
The Magpies might have gone in front late, but for the umpire overturning a goal and paying Garry Lyon a free in the dying minutes. John Northey responded by saying: "It's about time he got a bloody free kick".
Best were Lovell, J. Stynes and Jakovich. John Howat was a late withdrawal due to flu.
