Well out of the finals race, Melbourne were finishing a disappointing season strongly and had won their last two games. They weren't expected to trouble the top of the ladder Magpies at Victoria Park, but on a weekend where three games were decided by margins of over 100 points the visitors delivered a shocking upset. The Pies were handicapped by losing one player in the selected side, one after 11 minutes, and another at half time, but still looked like winning easily when 25 points up in time on of the third term. They had already recovered from an inaccurate start, with 1.8 on the board by the time Melbourne had four goals straight.
Allen Jakovich was the star with seven goals, but while 'Jako' equalled John Coleman's record for the fastest 100 goals in league history he was also subject to an accusation from a female spectator about unspecified conduct during the game. In a heated environment, several Collingwood fans had been seen abusing Jakovich when he was taken from the ground during the first quarter. John Northey and his match committee found the coach's box locked after half time and spent the first seven minutes of the third term coaching from the outer. The first key provided didn't work, but when the box was accessed again the Pies kicked a run of goals.
The margin was reduced to seven points at the last change, before Sean Wight put the Demons ahead at the 23 minute mark.
Peter Rohde kept Peter Daicos to six touches, but a snap from the boundary late in the game would have had the Magpies in front. It was disallowed because the umpire had already paid Garry Lyon a free. John Northey, who sent Lyon (who was battling flu) to full back at the start of the quarter, responded by saying: "It's about time he got a bloody free kick". Two minutes later Andy Lovell goalled to extend the margin back to nine points.
Best were Lovell, J. Stynes and Jakovich. John Howat was replaced in the selected side by Darren Bennett due to flu.
