Saturday 23 September - Albert Park Oval
Crowd: 2500
South Melbourne 5.10
Melbourne 2.9 (half time 3.4-2.5)
South Melbourne win by 3 goals
Goalkickers: Ulbrick 2
Melbourne's second last engagement for the season went much as most of their others during 1882. They had managed a draw against South in June but more often than not they'd suffered defeat.
Hot temperatures affected the players, but otherwise conditions were perfect for football. Melbourne surprisingly led off strongly in the first 15 minutes and it looked as if they were going to register a shock victory. They scored two behinds in the early minutes before Ulbrick goalled first from a place kick. He got another one not long after but that was the end of Melbourne for the afternoon.
After South dragged one goal back George Aitken could have restored the two goal buffer but missed an easy chance, and soon after the home side scored two goals to take the lead.
Other than a period of five minutes where Melbourne were on top, the second half was a procession for South. They kicked another two goals and won comfortably after the early scare.
Best were Mackenzie, E. Longden and Robertson.
