September 1870 Match 2 vs Carlton

Saturday September 24 - Melbourne Ground

Melbourne 1
Carlton 1

Match Drawn

Goalkickers: Towle 1

A proposed match against Albert Park to decide the winner of the Challenge Cup fell through when the visitors couldn't field a side. The match had already been postponed from earlier in the month, so Melbourne showed up and claimed they had won the cup by default before playing Carlton instead.

Carlton stepped in to play the final game of the season, and the clubs played a rematch of their game the previous Saturday. This time the Blues managed to get away with a draw.

Johnstone goalled first for the visitors before Towle eventually rewarded Melbourne for their hard pressing with the equaliser. The home side had the better of the rest of the game but couldn't break through.
