The major difference between the last match of the season and the first two clashes between the sides was that the regiment stuck to the rules this time around. The first time it had helped them to win, but the second time they had given away a number of free kicks.
Contrary to the usual rules of the era where two goals earned a team victory it was agreed that the sides would play until 6pm with the most goals winning.
The soldiers scored first before Melbourne equalised through Ryan. The two sides then struggled for more than an hour without a goal. The Regiment then scored a goal to take the lead. Melbourne then scored a second goal through O'Brien but it was disputed by the soldiers. Some reports suggest Henry Harrison agreed to acquiesce to keep the peace, but newspaper reports of the day list the second goal as having stood for a drawn match.
Best were Harrison, Freeman and O'Brien.
