Melbourne’s premiership defence ended with a second straight defeat. After comfortably beating the Lions three weeks earlier, they were unable to take advantage of a 28 point lead late in the second quarter and were eliminated from the 2022 season. Early in the game the Demon backline was on top, and when Kysaiah Pickett goalled late in the second term they reached a game high lead. This only lasted briefly before Brisbane replied with 15 seconds left in the half.
The game see-sawed throughout the third quarter, which ended with scores even, and the opening minutes of the last before Melbourne’s forward line stalled, leaving the Lions to kick away to a three goal lead with minutes left. Harrison Petty went forward as an emergency option, kicking one goal and setting up another before a Jake Lever 50 metre penalty gifted the Lions the sealing goal.
Best were Harmes, Petracca and Petty. Joel Smith was an unused substitute.
