Going into the match as warm favourites the Demons outplayed North early, a blistering seven goal first half and inaccuracy from their opponents allowing them to open up a comfortable lead, but persistent errors allowed the Kangaroos to stay in the match and kicked the last three goals of the first half to go into half-time with an 11 point lead.

The Kangaroos got the first of the third quarter, but it was their only goal for the term as Melbourne piled on the next four goals and look like they were set to run all over their opponents, but North found something in the fourth quarter and nearly snatched an improbable victory.

Leading by 22 points early in the last term, but when they shut up shop and started trying to defend the lead North struck and kicked four goals in a row, the last from Sav Rocca to grab the lead. Adem Yze went forward and kicked the winning goal at the 27 minute mark of the last quarter in his 150th match. He had 34 touches for the day. North rolled the dice and went forward once more but David Neitz rolled back and took a crucial mark in the final seconds to deny North victory.

Best were Yze, Woewodin and Bruce. Peter Vardy suffered a corked thigh and Craig Ellis an ankle injury.

It was the third week in a row Melbourne had been involved in a game decided by under a goal. They had now won two of them.
