Despite being second last on the ladder North had troubled several finals contenders throughout the first half of the season, and they proved a difficult prospect for the Demons to overcome.
Melbourne's inaccurate kicking was in contrast to their previous form where straight goalkicking had won them matches, but it didn't matter as they joined Carlton at the top of the ladder - second only on percentages.
It wasn't an easy win, with a tricky wind playing havoc with the ball both in the air and on the ground North went into the last quarter three points behind and kicking with the wind. The Shinboners attack was thwarted on numerous occasions by the Demon defence, who launched a series of counter attacks that put the result beyond doubt.
Deans, McGrath and Cordner were best.
