With one South Australian in Reg Conole debuting it was the Redlegs other import from Adelaide who did the damage in a devastating performance against the Same Olds.

George Margitich booted the second highest goal tally by a Melbourne player in history to set his side up for a comfortable victory, but at half time the win looked anything but certain.

Essendon held a ten point lead at the long break courtesy of 21 scoring shots to 11, but wasteful kicking saw them fail to take advantage. When Melbourne came out of the blocks with a burst in the third quarter they grabbed the lead before cantering to victory in the final term.

Even midway through the fourth quarter Essendon could still have won, but Margitich slammed home four goals to end the game and Melbourne were home.

Wittman and Johnson were also in the best. During the match a spectator is reported to have become over excited and died from a heart attack - the third to pass away at a Melbourne game in recent weeks.
