Both sides put out strong lineups, and Melbourne were too fit for their opponents on the day. With water lodged on one side of the ground both teams realised that running and drop-kicking would be hazardous so they instead punted the ball around the field.

Melbourne took their opportunities better at the start when they had the wind, and had three golden chances to add to their score early in the second quarter. Eventually the wind swung around and started blowing across the ground instead.

The game was more hard than skilful in the third quarter and Melbourne continued to increase their lead before playing over Collingwood in the last quarter. Vin Coutie, Melbourne's best forward, had been kept out of the game but in his absence a number of other players stood up strongly.

Drohan was Melbourne's best player.
