The Demons travelled to Perth to face Jeff Farmer and Troy Simmonds as opponents for the first time.
Trent Croad kicked seven goals for the Dockers but but it was Farmer's third that beat Melbourne, coming after the siren. He'd been given a free kick after David Neitz fell into his back just before the siren, and converted from 30 metres out to win the game.
Best were Whelan, Powell and Johnstone.
