Heavy rain lashed Adelaide the night before the game but the Football Park surface held up long enough for Melbourne to jump to third on the ladder with their fifth win of the year.

Once more dominance of the midfield was the difference between the sides, but David Schwarz booting four goals also helped. Three of his goals came in the second quarter from marks inside the forward 50. Shane Woewodin was again dominant in the middle during the first half with 21 touches, four rebounds, four inside 50s and two goals. Woewodin and the midfield brigade were the difference, with their run and carry play and slick ball movement.

The win meant the Demons had won all day games between the sides, and Power had won all the night matches. At the time it was Melbourne's highest score against Port.

Best were Woewodin, Powell and A. McDonald.
