The inconsistent Demons followed an exciting win over Richmond with a poor start against the struggling Hawks. The margin was 27 by quarter time, and narrowly extended to 29 by the half. Jayden Hunt went forward and sparked his side with two quick goals. The Demons then got on a roll and drew to within a point at the last change.
Melbourne weren't able to get in front, and Hawthorn steadied to win by three points.
Best were Viney, Frost and Tyson. Hunt suffered a shoulder injury.
