Melbourne's fourth win in the first seven weeks marked the high point of their season. In a top quality game, Matthew Lloyd kicked seven and Jeff Farmer six but the Demons won with a larger spread of goalkickers. Lloyd also collected teammate Blake Caracella with an elbow that was intended for Shane Woewodin. In the absence of Dustin Fletcher, it was the first time for weeks multiple Melbourne forwards had sparked at the same time, with David Neitz adding four to Farmer's haul.
Each team kicked six goals in both of the first two quarters, and Melbourne took the lead with five to four in the third term. They led by four points at three quarter time before restricting Essendon to a solitary major in the last. A disciplinary lapse hurt the Bombers, with the margin just eight points 18 minutes into the last quarter before Chris Heffernan gave away a needless 50 metre penalty which gifted James McDonald a certain goal. Shortly after, Schwarz was felled by a high tackle in front of goal and the game was safe.
Melbourne won just two more games for the year.
Farmer and Viney were joined in the bests by David Neitz and Andrew Leoncelli. Viney and White helped dominate the last quarter and put the Bombers away.
Matthew Febey was a late withdrawal with an ankle injury, replaced by Darren Kowal.
