Geelong win by 45 points
Graeme Yeats (16th game)
The Demons' topsy turvey season saw them drop to 2-3 with a loss at Kardinia Park, thanks mainly to another in a string of magical performances by Gary Ablett. Peter Giles had held Ablett well in the early stages and despite their inability to put a score of their own on the board Melbourne were keeping the Geelong forwards quiet.
At the other end Mark Yeates was destroying Brian Wilson, holding him to three kicks for the day and Robert Flower saw his horror run with injuries continue as he suffered a possible fracture of the cheekbone. Also quiet was Peter Moore, beaten handily by the Geelong rucks.
Barassi was disgusted with his side's performance, and even more distressed at their long injury list. Peter Moore had a possible fractured cheekbone, Darryl Cox an injured shin, Shane Zantuck and Brian Wilson both neck injuries and Paul Payne a concussion.
The coach called it their worst performance of the year. Only Gerard Healy could hold his head high, with 30 touches. Other players amongst the best were Withers and Johnson.
