The Demons' topsy turvey season saw them drop to 3-4, thanks mainly to another in a string of magical performances by Gary Ablett. Peter Giles had held Ablett well in the early stages and despite their inability to put a score of their own on the board Melbourne were keeping the Geelong forwards quiet. Ablett had been out of action with the flu all weekend but came good when it counted and kicked five of his side's 12 goals.

At the other end Mark Yeates was destroying Brian Wilson, holding him to three kicks for the day and Peter Moore suffered a fractured cheekbone as well as being handily beaten by Geelong's rucks.

Barassi was disgusted with his side's performance, and even more distressed at their long injury list. In addition to Peter Moore, Darryl Cox had an injured shin, Shane Zantuck and Brian Wilson both neck injuries and Paul Payne a concussion.

The coach called it their worst performance of the year. Only Gerard Healy could hold his head high, with 30 touches. Other players amongst the best were Withers and Johnson.
