Melbourne hadn't won a match against Collingwood since beating them in the 1926 Grand Final, and the trend continued.

In a dry first half the Redlegs had the advantage, kicking goals early in the second quarter to build a 16 point advantage at half time, but when rain fell in the second half the Magpies took over and won comfortably.

The margin at half time could have been more if Melbourne had pressed home their 16 point advantage instead of chipping the ball around. Collingwood cut the gap to five points and then unleashed their tough big men to advantage.

Best were Wittman, Johnson and Murray. At the end of the match, a Collingwood player threw a punch at an abusive fan, who ducked and caused the player to accidentally punch a female spectator in the face instead.
