First Goal
Billy Bremner (22nd game)

Melbourne kicked with the wind in the first quarter and took full advantage, leading by 27 points at the first change. They then booted three into the wind in the second to take a comfortable lead into the long break. Their second use of the breeze was less successful, but by restricting the home side to one goal they still had a handy lead going into the last quarter. There they were untroubled, winning by 31 points.

The hero was Coutie, who kick most of his eight goals from opportunities he himself had created.

It was Melbourne's first VFL win at Corio Oval in nine attempts.

Best were Coutie, Langley and Moodie.
