In a further reminder that nothing was going right for the Dees in 1974, Bob Skilton missed training during the week with the flu and had to be replaced by assistant coach Roy Simmonds. Skilton recovered for the game, and coached his sixth straight defeat.
Having announced he was off to the US to play Gridiron, John Tilbrook gave himself a going away party by kicking the first two goals of the afternoon and five for the day. He had four of his goals by half time, but when the Magpies starting taking his threat seriously he was restricted to three kicks for the rest of the match.
The Dees held a deserved lead at the last break, but their inexperience cost them and Collingwood ran over the top of them in the last quarter to consign Bob Skilton to his 6th straight loss for the year and to Melbourne's 12th straight against Collingwood.
Best were Alves, Owens and Clennett. Runner Sam Allica was reported for abusive language and suspended for eight matches. Collins was replaced by Murray in the third quarter, Williamson was an unused reserve.
