With the two sides locked together all day it was the Hawk defence which was keeping them in the game. The Demons attacked repeatedly in the last quarter before Graeme Jacobs finally goalled in the thirteenth minute. It extended the margin to ten, but in such a closely fought game the Hawks couldn't conjure up two scores to win. They goalled with a minute left but ran out of time when Tassie Johnson marked in defence on the siren.

Johnson had been one of the crucial players for his side. Hawk full forward John Peck had four goals from four kicks against Bernie Massey before the Melbourne defender was injured in the second quarter. Johnson then held him to 1.2 for the rest of the game.

The Demons aerial supremacy was a major factor in the victory, in the first half they won the marks 52 to 26 and in the tight last quarter they won 30 of 39 contests.

Best were Townsend, Roet and Johnson. Massey (thigh) was replaced by Bartlett in the second quarter. Matthews was an unused reserve.

After battling through three difficult games for two victories, they were now rewarded with two easy games to further boost their finals chances. They were still only percentage ahead of Collingwood and Essendon in fifth and sixth.
