On a bitterly cold day with a sharp wind affecting all the league venues Melbourne saw their finals hopes blow away as they crashed to their fifth loss out of six to start the year.
The adverse weather committee had to be called on to decide if the game could continue in the awful weather, but despite the horrendous conditions there were still large crowds reported at most venues.
On the same day in an Association match the players of Melbourne City voted to abandon a match against Brighton when one of their number had to be attended to by doctors for effects from the cold at half time.
By Albert Park Lake the Redlegs were playing to salvage their season but lacked the skill required to topple the Swans in such terrible weather.
Despite the natural gap between the sides the Reds were in the match after a third quarter when they were the superior side, but when they added just one point in the last quarter against a wall of South defenders pushed up the ground the home side held on to an easy victory.
Tomkins was Melbourne's best despite defying doctor's orders about an injured ankle to play. Lilley was also prominent.
The match was played on the same day as a federal election.
