Melbourne were missing Strong, their best player so far in 1909, and Harris but University were also without several players. Neither side could claim a great advantage in the first quarter, with the students taking a slight lead but Melbourne probably the better side in general play. The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Melbourne sneaking in front at the long break.
The game was won in the third quarter when Melbourne kicked three goals to one, and despite a slight comeback by the opposition in the last quarter they were more consistent in finishing their chances and extended the margin further.
Best were Brereton, Flintoft and Cope.
