Melbourne's faltering start to the season took a turn for the positive with a huge win the Cats, their third straight away victory alongside two surprises losses at home.
After a first half featuring tight defensive and abysmal kicking for goal the low scores at the start of the third quarter seemed to indicate the crowd were in for a tight finish but the Demons ran riot in the second half to win comfortably.
Geelong flew out of the blocks in the third quarter before being swamped by a nine goal run on the way to a 16.11 to 6.4 Demon advantage in the second half.
They were helped by the inaccuracy of Geelong forward Doug Wade - who had turned his back on Melbourne to join the Cats - who only managed three goals from nine shots. Injuries to both Geelong's rovers also gave them an advantage, but victory was also delivered on the back of a strong performance by the Demons' half forward line.
Best were Barassi, Dixon and Adams. Brian Dixon was replaced by Ray Dawson in the last quarter, and Brian Gleeson by Len Mann also in the final term.
