The Demons horror season lurched from bad to worse when they suffered their fifth straight defeat of the year, extending their worst start to a season since 1932. South's ruck division won handily and their defence held the visitors at bay often enough to hold onto a three goal victory.
Lance Arnold was a tower of strength in the Melbourne defence, but when the ball passed him and landed deep in the Swans forward line their attacking players had all the time in the world to size up the goals and more often than not kick truly. Melbourne attacked first, and got the first goal through Beckwith, but were soon behind and never got back in front.
In the last quarter the Demons cut the lead to under a goal but South steadied and took the points.
Best were Jackson, Arnold and Smeaton. Unused 19th and 20th men were T. McLean and O'Keeffe.
