Melbourne's shocking start to their premiership defence continued, with a third narrow loss in a month - this time against a young North Melbourne side.
In a low scoring game the Demons had just three goals on the board at three quarter time, and had failed to kick one in the third. The difference was that Melbourne were wasteful in the last three quarters and in the end it cost them - dropping the defending champions to 1-4 and leaving them on the verge of elimination from the finals.
The Demons had a chance to win late, but a Lance Arnold shot after the bell went off the side of his boot and out on the full.
Don Cordner, Woods and Denis Cordner were best. Bowman and Hanna were 19th and 20th men.
