After only narrowly escaping the Junction Oval with their unbeaten record intact after a thrilling win over St Kilda a week earlier, the Demons welcome the only other unbeaten team in the competition - one who they held a narrow 0.5% percent lead on at the top of the table.
The Demons took a terrible record against the Pies into the match, having only registered one draw against them in a home and away match since 1922. They had won finals, but during the regular season they were regularly beaten no matter which ground the match was played on.
For the first 10 minutes the game was a series of scrambles, punctuated by 35 free kicks. Collingwood played with more composure in the first quarter, while Melbourne were wild in their ball movement. The Pies opened a nine point lead at the first break.
Melbourne improved their system in the second term, but their forward work was patchy. In a swirling wind they wasted chances all day, and with the game in the balance it took until the third quarter for them to assert dominance. It was only stoic defence by the Magpies which kept the margin to 10 points at the last change. The lead had changed hands 10 times in the first three quarters.
They finally broke the shackles, and their long losing streak, with a dominant last quarter. Having only been narrowly in front at the last change they peppered the goals for the entire last quarter, opening with 1.7, then kicking 5.9 to 4.0 to run out easy winners. Collingwood struck back late but 11 points was as close as they got.
Best were Gibb, Baggott and Ogden. Furniss was unused 19th man. Lock was a late withdrawal, replaced by first gamer Buckley. Ogden was injured by a kick to his thigh.
