The Lions first visit to the MCG for 1970 had been a smashing success, with a shock victory against reigning premiers Richmond in front of the Royal Family. They hadn't won a game since and returned to the ground desperately trying to get their season back on track.

When they went into the quarter time huddle with 8.3 on the board and a three goal lead it looked a good bet, but their form dropped off throughout the match and despite still being three points in front at the long break, and just three goals down at the last change they showed little resistance in the final term.

Best were Bourke, Dillon and Carr. Melbourne did not use replacement players Danny Jennings or Graham Osborne.

It was Melbourne's highest score against Fitzroy since 1963.
