Just a month into the season and the Demons season lurched from disaster to crisis with their fourth consecutive loss.
Six goals in the first quarter set alarm bells off for the home side, but five goals in 10 minutes before half-time gave Melbourne some hope of salvaging a result out of a first half which had, until that point, been yet another in a long line of disappointments for fans so used to watching teams playing magic football.
Swans Captain/Coach Bob Skilton gave his side a tongue lashing at half time and they responded by holding Melbourne to 0.4 in the third quarter and adding five goals themselves to kill the contest. The Demons could barely clear the ball out of their own backline and were lucky that the foot went off the accelerator in the last term and they were able to salvage some respectability with a four goal to one quarter.
Best were Bourke, Dillon and Vearing. Bartlett (bruised thigh) was replaced by Stone in the third quarter.
